Danner Mountain Light II 5" Hiking Boots – Black
The Danner Mountain Light II is not just a boot; it is an icon of American backpacking. Handcrafted in Portland, Oregon, this boot has set the standard for rugged durability and support for decades. Built for the hiker who views their gear as an investment, the Mountain Light II features a one-piece full-grain leather upper, a design choice that eliminates potential failure points and minimizes seams where water or debris could enter.
Beneath the classic exterior lies modern protection. A 100% waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX liner ensures your feet stay dry in the harshest downpours, while the Vibram® Kletterlift outsole provides exceptional shock absorption and stability on both wet rocks and dry scree. Perhaps most importantly, this boot features Danner’s legendary Stitchdown construction, creating a wider, more stable platform and making the boot fully recraftable—ensuring that this pair stays with you for a lifetime of adventure.
FEATURES:
-
Made in USA: Built from top to bottom in Danner's Portland, Oregon factory with a commitment to superior craftsmanship since 1932.
-
One-Piece Leather Upper: Constructed from a single piece of premium full-grain leather. This reduces seams, increases water resistance, and eliminates weak spots prone to tearing.
-
GORE-TEX Waterproofing: Integrated with a GORE-TEX liner that guarantees waterproof protection while allowing sweat vapor to escape, keeping feet dry from the inside out.
-
Stitchdown Construction: The upper is stitched deeply to the midsole, providing a wider platform for stability under heavy pack loads and allowing the boot to be resoled/recrafted.
-
Vibram® 148 Kletterlift Outsole: Designed for comfort and durability, this outsole features a lug pattern that sheds mud and a heel compound specifically engineered for shock absorption.
-
Danner Airthotic®: A unique, molded polyurethane half-length instep that cups the heel and supports the arch while allowing maximum airflow (Note: This is different from a traditional full-length insole).
-
Lace-to-Toe Design: The lacing system extends far down the toe box, allowing you to winch the boot tight for a secure, precise fit on difficult terrain.

Sizing & Fit Guide:
- The 650 Last: This boot is built on the 650 Last, which offers a sleek, slender profile with a narrow fit.
- Sizing Advice:
- Narrow/Standard Feet: Fits true to length but snug in width. The lace-to-toe design helps dial in the fit.
- Wide Feet: You must order the EE (Wide) width. If you have a significantly wide foot, this last may feel tight in the toe box initially.
- Break-in Period: Significant. These are old-school, heavy-duty leather boots. Expect a break-in period of 20-40 miles to soften the leather and mold the footbed. Do not wear them on a long hike right out of the box.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
-
Are these boots heavy?
The weight comes from the thick full-grain leather, the heavy-duty rubber midsole, and the stitchdown construction. This weight translates to unmatched stability and protection when carrying a heavy backpack (40+ lbs) over rough terrain. They support your ankles so your muscles don't have to work as hard.
-
What is the "Airthotic" footbed?
It is a half-length plastic/polyurethane heel cup and arch support. It is not a squishy foam insole. Many hikers prefer to remove it and replace it with a modern orthotic (like Superfeet) for a more customized fit.
-
Can I resole these?
Yes! The Stitchdown construction is fully recraftable. Once you wear down the Vibram sole after thousands of miles, you can send them back to Danner (or a skilled cobbler) to have the sole replaced, the leather conditioned, and the stitching repaired.
-
Are they warm enough for winter?
They are Non-Insulated. However, the thick leather and GORE-TEX liner provide decent warmth for active movement in cool weather. For static winter use or extreme cold, you would need thick wool socks or an insulated model.
